RO Water Purifier – Dos and Don’ts

Regular RO water purifier service & maintenance is key to the smooth working of your RO. Clean water is a big challenge in India because the tap water supply is usually not clean. And installing a RO water purifier is now a proven way to ensure an ample supply of clean water at your home. If RO water purifier service is done well, it can last for up to 10 years or more. Many consumers also choose to buy an AMC to get their RO water purifier service done on regular basis.

RO water purifier service

Making a decision to buy and install an RO at home can be simple, it can be hard to maintain it. Therefore, regular RO water purifier service is very essential to ensure it produces clean water. Here are a few Dos and Donts to maintain your RO water purifier in top working condition:

Read the RO user manual thoroughly

The most important basic tip is to read and understand the RO cleaning process given in the user manual. It is an essential activity and mostly ignored. All RO water purifiers come with a user manual, that gives you complete details on RO parts, dos, and don’ts, working, and tips on RO water purifier service. Most reputed brands such as KENT RO, ZERO B RO, HUL Pureit RO, AQUAGUARD RO, EUREKA FORBES RO, etc. come with a user manual guide. This will help you in maintaining your RO and keep your water filter in a good condition.

Change the RO filters periodically

Over a period of time and usage, the impurities in tap water start to clog and block the filters in your RO. Excessive clogging or blocking has an adverse impact on the ability of the RO to filter water. This affects the quality and quantity of the water that passes through the RO filter. Tap water quality in India varies by city and geography. Therefore it is hard to prescribe a standard time limit when you need to replace filter for your RO. 3 months is a generally accepted norm. That is the reason most OEMs schedule their Ro water purifier service & maintenance visit every 3 months. Please don’t ignore this regular Ro water purifier service need. Even if the filter is not clogged, it is a good idea to have them checked every 3 months.

Drain the RO water purifier storage tank periodically

It is good practice to drain the RO storage tank once every 15 days. Draining lets the RO system fully turn the water in the tank. Usually, we end up using a small volume of water multiple times a day. So, the RO unit keeps on refilling just the top portion of the tank. If the water remains in the storage tank for a longer period of time, there are high chances of germs contamination. That leads to bad smell and taste. If you don’t use a good amount of water, drain the tank every 2 weeks to change the water, and preserve water quality.

Cleaning the RO pipes regularly

Any RO water purifier system uses pipes to connect the water from one filtration process to another. Clean your RO pipes regularly to ensure the RO water purifier works fine. These pipes can get attention at the same time when your inspection of filters takes place.

Don’t ignore any leakages in your RO water purifier

If you notice a leak in your RO, call for RO water purifier service immediately. Leakages can create a lot of problems and can damage your RO unit. You can also schedule a maintenance check-up and make sure that the leak is sealed. Your RO service professional will take care of the same.

RO membrane replacement

An RO filter comes with a semi-membrane, which lets water pass through it. This semi membrane removes the impurities and gives you clean water. Change your RO membrane every 3 months for ideal performance. You should fix an appointment for RO water purifier service, as it is one of the important parts that help in producing clean water.

Regular RO water purifier service

Most of the above tips point towards regular RO water purifier service. Please ensure it happens regularly.

AMC – Annual Maintenance Contract

One of the ways to get regular RO water purifier service is to buy an AMC. Many people ignore this important part and avoid taking AMC for their RO unit. One of the reasons is difficulty in accessing to brand apps, portals, and contact centers, and following a paper trail. OneDios app provides AMC for all RO brands in just a few clicks in an online paperless manner.

Different types of water purification methods

Waterborne diseases cause thousands of fatalities in India every year. While the government provides us with clean water for our daily needs, it is not suitable for drinking purposes. One needs to adopt water purification methods or RO to consume water without fear of diseases, chemicals, odors or noxious elements.

Simple methods such as where one uses a sieve at the valve are not sufficient to filter out clean drinking water.

Boiling water is cost-effective as compared to buying and installing water filters. Boiling water at a high temperature removes bacteria, virus and chemical additions from the water. However, dead micro-organisms and impurities settle at the bottom of the water. To remove these impurities, one must strain the water through a microporous sieve.

As boiling water is a labor and time-intensive process, there is a need to install a water filtration system in the house.

Many filters look similar but have different characteristics. Therefore, it is important to understand the differences to select a water filter most suitable for your needs:

  • There are significant differences in the filtration quality of the water depending on various types and brands of filters available.
  • NSF certification does not guarantee or imply the elimination of any particular contaminant.
  • Some filters use multiple technologies to eradicate contaminants, while others may use a single type of technology.

This blog’s purpose is to introduce the most common types of water filtration processes as detailed below:

RO
  1. Distillation

Distillation involves evaporating water by boiling it to extremely high temperatures. The water vapor that arises from this method is condensed back into filtered, liquid water.

Distillation removes minerals, bacteria, and chemicals that have a high boiling point. However, as the water boils at 100°C (212 °F), this method doesn’t remove the impurities that have a different heating point. Volatile organic chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, and many more may not be filtered via this process.

  1. Reverse osmosis (RO)

Reverse osmosis filters water through a semi-permeable membrane in order to stop larger impurities and more harmful molecules from entering. The membrane acts as an exceptional filter as the process involves pushing the impure water against its natural direction, which requires more energy. Therefore, the process needs power-driven pumps to function.

Reverse Osmosis can only block molecules that are bigger than water. It is suitable for removing chemical pollutants such as chloride, chromium, copper, sodium and lead. Reverse osmosis systems eliminate more contaminants than carbon, making them a prevalent choice for many consumers. However,  ROsystems do not eradicate dissolved gases like hydrogen sulfide, few insecticides, and herbicides. Carbon filters combined with RO purifier gives better result in cleaning impurities.

  1. Activated Carbon Filter

Activated carbon filtration is great at removing contaminants like chlorine-based compounds, few pesticides and industrial elements. Galvanized carbon used in this process is an absorbent form of carbon, based on charcoal. This process is normally used in many home water filtration systems. Carbon eliminates impurities by chemically bonding to the water that is discharged into the system. It includes using the active absorption aptitudes of carbon in reducing contaminations and also eliminates bad odors and tastes. It is significant to note that carbon filters do not have the ability to eliminate inorganic pollutants such as nitrates, fluoride, sodium and arsenic.

  1. Ion Exchange

Technology works to soften water by using a resin to replace detrimental ions with ones that are less damaging. Ion exchange is frequently used to soften water since it has the ability to exchange calcium and magnesium with sodium. In this process, the ion-exchange filter efficiently splits apart the composites around it.

There is still a need to go through an additional filtration to be able to consume this water. In order for this purification system to work for a prolonged period of time, the resin must be often “invigorated” with harmless replacement ions.

  1. Activated Alumina Water Filter

Activated alumina targets fluoride in drinking water. The filter is built of aluminum oxide (Al2O3), a similar element to sapphire and ruby without any of the coloring impurities. Activated alumina removes fluoride, arsenic, thallium and selenium from drinking water. With several pores on its surface, the alumina can condense up to 99% of fluoride absorptions in the normal fluoridated water.

It is important to acknowledge and understand that a good water filtration system is the first line of defense when it comes to your daily water requirements. Maintenance and service of RO on regular basis is mandotary for healthy drinking water.

How to make the best use of RO waste water?

Safe drinking water is a necessity for every home. Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifier provides us with clean and safe water, which also protects us from waterborne life-threatening diseases. Amongst all the water purifier technologies, RO water purification is the most trustworthy. If your home/office has high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) water, then the best choice would be to use an RO water purifier.
Most of the RO purifiers discard 75% water during the distillation process. The waste water from RO purifiers surpasses the amount of water that is actually filtered by around three times. While RO water purifiers offer reliable water purification, they result in excessive wastage of water. As there is a high level of contamination and dissolved solids in the discarded water, it cannot be used for drinking or bathing purposes.

The water also tends to comprise of inorganic salts and organic matter in variable quantities that add to its unusable quality.
Membrane technology of ROs requires extra water to clean the filter which leads to excess wastage. As there is a high content of dissolved solids, the water becomes contaminated and unsuitable for drinking. The percentage of waste water varies according to the make & model of the RO purifier being used.

So, should we stop using RO purification methods?

No, RO waste water can be used in numerous ways to manage the overall wastage of water.
In this blog we are sharing a few effective ways to utilize RO waste water:

1.Watering your garden:

Waste RO water can be used for watering plants to keep your garden green. It is advisable to dilute the RO waste water with the tap water as RO water contains high levels of TDS.

2. Washing your car:

Washing your car with waste RO water is an ideal use, rather than wasting clean water for the task. A single car wash requires an average of 14 liters of water which can be saved using RO waste water.

3. For mopping the floor:

Mopping the floor with the RO reject water is the perfect way to save drinking water, as floor mopping will require approximately 10 liters of water. RO water is clean water, except for dissolved impurities.

4. Cleaning utensils:

Washing utensils with RO water is a smart way to utilize RO waste water. Keep the water in a separate tank and use it to clean the utensils. It is advisable to mix the discarded RO water with normal water as RO waste water contains dissolved salts, therefore this can leave salt stains on your utensils.

5. Flushing purpose:

You can use the RO waste water for flushing your toilet, as every single flush requires around 6 liters of water. Regularly monitor your toilet seat for discoloration on the porcelain surface. With regular checkups, the possibility of discoloration and salt deposits reduces.

Conclusion:

It is advisable to check the TDS level of the wastewater before reusing it. One can save a large amount of water when utilizing RO wastewater.
Your RO water purifier is the first line of defense when it comes to your daily water requirements. It is vital that your RO system is properly maintained and serviced at regular intervals.

Is RO Water Harmful?

Rise in pollution in the last few decades has led to a reduction in the quality of the air, the water we drink, and the food we eat. Polluted air, water, and food have caused numerous health issues. To resolve this, a number of pollution management devices have come to market. For water pollution management and to make tap water potable, devices such as reverse osmosis (RO) water purifiers have become the new essentials.

There are numerous brands like Acromec RO, AO Smith RO, Livpure RO, Aqua Fresh RO, Aqua Guard RO, Eureka Forbes RO, etc. available in the market.
RO is a method of purifying water by applying pressure. The water flows through a sequence of artificial and semi-permeable membranes to eliminate the contamination and produce fresh and clean drinking water.
So, why is that there is so much cynicism surrounding the process of filtration of water that paints RO water in a bad light?
According to a recent warning issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), RO filters strip away calcium, magnesium, and other necessary nutrients from the water.
But before we jump to any conclusions, we will try and debunk some of the myths surrounding RO water:

RO water is harmful to drink:

The main source of organic minerals like calcium & magnesium is food and not water alone. Contaminated water on the other hand does more harm to the body.
Untreated water can carry water-borne infections, as well as dissolved impurities like lead, arsenic, fluorides, and hormone disruptors like bisphenol A, which are detrimental to health in the long run.

Safe water is a basic necessity. While most traditional methods are aimed at disinfecting water, they are not effective in removing dissolved solids. As the RO method is fairly effective in removing these dissolved impurities, it has become popular in India.

RO water can cause stomach disorders:

There is a myth that RO water can cause stomach disorders as it is acidic in nature. When the water flows through the RO system and eradicates impurities, the pH level drops from 7 to 5.5 (Regular water has a neutral pH level of 7). This can make the water acidic. However, as the water comes in contact with the food in your stomach, the low pH level will adjust and alter. The body has the ability to maintain equilibrium.
The truth is that in countries like India where we have no set standards on where we get our water sources from, following the WHO warning is not possible.

The benefits of RO water in India outweigh the effects of essential minerals being stripped out of the water. RO water contains no lead, reducing the risk of high blood pressure and keeps kidney and liver diseases at bay. It also does not contain water parasites, especially cryptosporidium, which can get into the digestive tract and cause gastrointestinal diseases. RO water contains no sodium, making it suitable for those on a limited sodium intake diet.
As we can understand, ROs are a necessity and a reality of life in India.
It is important that the RO system is properly service at regular intervals. Therefore, if your RO is due for maintenance?

RO AMC -Should you buy for your home?

RO AMC -should you buy for your home?

The quick and short answer is YES. Please read the complete blog to understand what type of RO AMC should you buy.  We shall also try to give the reasons for our recommendation.

RO for pure water at home

The last few years have seen a sudden rise in pollution levels. The quality of the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat have also gone down because of pollution. Polluted air, water, and food can cause multiple health issues. Several products have been launched in the market to counter the ill effects of pollution.  RO water purifier is one such product. It has proven to be a very effective and affordable method for water purification. The success of the RO water purifier can be seen in the fast adoption of this technique.  Sales of new RO units each year is rising steadily.  This growth has also seen the launch of a  lot of brands in the market today.  Notable amongst them are Kent, ZeroB, Eureka Forbes, AO Smith, Livpure, AquaFresh, AquaGuard, etc.

Timely and  regular RO Service is important

Just because you have bought an RO, please don’t think your water worries are over. The purchase and installation of a RO unit is not enough. Pure and safe drinking water can only be available when your RO unit works properly. And that will happen when the RO unit filters and performs optimally. Over the passage of time, the filters and membrane of a water filter unit get clogged. Regular RO service and timely replacement of such damaged and clogged components can help ensure the continuous working of your RO.

RO AMC

An annual maintenance contract for RO is a good tool to provide for the above-mentioned requirements and reduce cases of break down.

There are numerous types and variations of AMC plans available in the market for RO units. An end consumer needs to select a suitable plan according to his requirement and budget. Regular repairs and maintenance of the water filtering system ensure healthy and unadulterated drinking water 24/7, at all times of the year.

You should evaluate different AMC plans before the free service or warranty period expiry for your RO. Also, it is important to understand what all is part of the AMC and what forms the list of exclusions.  The price of these AMCs also differs from models and brands.

Types of RO AMC available in the Indian market

  1. All-inclusive AMC with labor contract – As the name suggests this is a comprehensive plan. This plan practically covers everything that could go wrong with your RO. It also covers regular RO service. Such plans cover even expensive parts like RO motor.
  2. Spare components and labor inclusive RO service contract– Constant wear and tear warrants the replacement of some parts regularly. e.g. water filter. Such RO AMC plans cover those replacements along with regular service of the RO.
  3. Labor only AMC contract – Such type of AMC plan just ensures that the RO service happens as per the contract periodicity. A labor-only contract does not cover spares or parts.

OneDios recommended AMC type

A household cannot afford to compromise on the quality of water it uses for drinking and cooking. Also, any breach in the continuous availability of water can bring the household chores to a stop. If such an event happens, help should be instant. Ideally, intervention should be proactive. Your home should not be at the mercy of a RO service provider or their availability. The best is to engage with a dependable RO service provider well in advance for your RO AMC. It is preferable to buy an AMC contract that includes service and components which require periodic replacement. That is Option 2 from the above selection.

Option 1 – Comprehensive AMC plans are usually cost high.  Such plans also cover parts like motor etc which seldom go bad. We do not recommend Option 3- Labor only RO AMC contract. Such a contract just opens the door for the technician to push spare sales.

How often should you get your RO serviced?

Reverse Osmosis, commonly known as RO is the most common water filtration technique used in Indian households, But, what is RO and what does an RO water purifier actually do?

RO helps remove impurities from unfiltered water. It is a special kind of filtration technology, in which, water is deionized by pushing it under the pressure using a semi-permeable, absorbent membrane. This process sieves large molecules or contagion. The water then moves from the more concerted side (more impurities) to less concerted side (less impurities) to offer uncontaminated and clean drinking water. The clean water processed is known as permeate and the left over water is known as brine or litter. Given the pivotal role that the RO filters and membranes play in the process, timely replacement of RO filters and membranes is vital. To optimize the efficiency of your RO unit, regular servicing is essential.

Why it is essential to change your filters and cartridges?

A filter is like the lungs of your water purifier, filtering detrimental waste product from your drinking water and ensuring only the cleanest and safest water makes its way to you. With regular use, wreckages or fragments can clog the inside of the filter which can damage the filer (or even the RO) permanently. Also, given the filters are carbon-based, they lose their absorbent properties with time and hence need regular replacement. That’s why it is important to maintain to pay close attention to RO and replace your RO filter on time.

How often should RO filters be replaced and serviced?

The pre-filter RO, which is mounted outside the RO water purifier, should be changed within 3 to 4 months, but it depends on the quality and volume of water distilled. The other pre-filters such as, DI cartridge, Carbon and Sediment filter can ideally be replaced within 6 to 12 months, subject to how many gallons of water passes through them, but every filter should be inspected independently. Therefore, to be sure and safe, it is mandatory to get your RO filters changed within 1 year. Whereas, RO membrane should be replaced every 2 years. If RO service is not performed on a regular basis, this could result in pollutants being present in your drinking water, which can be hazardous for health.

While the above acts as a helpful guide, the actual time and frequency of servicing are completely dependent on the amount of water being filtered from your RO, the impurities in your supply tap water, and the service cycle. The bottom line is if you have been using your filter for almost a year now, it is probably time you get it serviced and filters, etc., replaced.

If you think your RO service is due, why not raise a service request on OneDios? You can raise a service request in a few clicks without having to call multiple people or search for phone numbers.  OneDios app is a one-stop-shop for all your service, complaints, and repair requests.
